Is it Worth it to Hire a Lawn Service?

In 2021, I chose to hire a lawn service rather than mowing the lawn myself. This was not an easy decision to make, but each week, I’m reminded why I made the decision to stop mowing, trimming, and edging my own lawn. Is it worth it to hire a lawn service?

It’s worth it to hire a lawn service and you can justify the monthly expense by determining how you will use the time you would be spending caring for your lawn. Once I determined the value per hour of my time, the decision to hire a lawn care service made sense.

How much does it cost to hire a lawn care service?

Walking outside on a Saturday morning to a fresh-cut lawn that you didn’t have to mow is a great feeling. The day is full of possibilities when you’re not dedicating half a day every weekend to lawn care. How much does it cost to hire a lawn care service?

I currently pay $50 every two weeks to have my lawn mowed. Once the growing season gets into full swing, I need my lawn cut every week. The service I use charges $40 every week to hire their lawn care service.

Determine your own hourly rate

I make about $60 an hour working 40 hours per week. It takes me about 2 hours to mow, trim, leaf blow, trim hedges, rake leaves, etc. If someone were to pay me to do this, they would have to pay me at least $120 for the day’s work. I’m paying a landscaping company $45 to do the same amount of work in half the time.

I would much rather spend time writing on firethefamily.com and continuing to build traffic for my passive income goals. In the time it takes me to mow a lawn, I can write an article that will generate traffic and money indefinitely.

The benefits of hiring a lawn service

The list of benefits to hiring a lawn care service to mow, trim, and edge my yard is long. I’ve compiled a list of the reasons why I chose to hire a lawn care service rather than mowing my own lawn.

The benefits of hiring a lawn service:

  • More time on the weekends with my family

  • Avoiding the hot and humid summer

  • More time to enjoy the yard

  • Lawn care services do a better job than I can

  • Selling my lawn equipment frees up garage space

  • My garage is cleaner

  • More room in my dumpster without the grass clippings

More time on the weekends with my family

I work in a high-stress, quota-carrying, commission-based sales position, and my wife is an elementary school teacher. We have two of our kids in daycare all week and our oldest is in elementary school.

Since we aren’t home with the little ones much during the week, we try to maximize our time on the nights and weekends. This means giving them our full attention, taking them to do fun things, spending time together, etc. If I have to mow weekly, that’s 1/3 of a weekend day that I’m spending working. For those who don’t call lawncare work, it’s literally people’s job to mow and trim yards. It’s work.

We are a church-going family. On Sunday, we attend church, like to go to lunch afterward, and usually go to homegroup most Sunday nights. That’s pretty much a full day where I cannot mow during the cooler part of the day. This leaves me with Saturday as the ideal day to mow. I don’t want to spend the best hours of every Saturday mowing in the hot, muggy summers. I’d rather be at the lake, tubing the river, at the waterpark, etc.

Avoiding the hot and humid summer

We live in Texas. It’s hot and humid in the summer and Texas has some of the highest skin cancer rates in the country. When it’s 100+ degrees with high humidity, it takes a lot out of you to mow and takes quite a bit longer than planned. That’s valuable time and energy I’m not willing to give up on the weekends.

In addition to the weather, the mowing season in Texas is long. From March to November, people are mowing. That’s double what the mowing season was in the Pacific Northwest.

More time to enjoy the yard

When someone else manages your lawn care, you can actually enjoy your yard on your time off. They mow during the week while I’m working. It’s likely that I’m earning more at that moment, then it’s costing me to have them mow my lawn.

When the weekend hits, we can enjoy our yard to its fullest extent. Increasing our rest and relaxation before starting the next week.

Lawn care services do a better job than I can

It was clear after their first visit that the lawn care company does a much better job than I do. They have professional equipment, more than one person, and really make the yard look nice.

When I mow, I mow to mow. Get it done. get in, and get out. When they mow, they’re trying to keep my business. If they do bad work, I might cancel my service. Having someone in a position where they stand to lose business usually turns out decent work for the time spent.

Selling my lawn equipment frees up garage space

I don’t have an edger, I always wanted one, but never pulled the trigger on it. The main reason is that I also value my garage space. half of my garage is a gym and I wasn’t willing to sacrifice more space to lawn care equipment.

When someone cares for your lawn, you can get rid of your mower, trimmer, leaf blower, edger, fertilizer, fertilizer spreader, etc. I haven’t yet (just in case it doesn’t work out), but I plan to in the future.

My garage is cleaner

When someone else manages your lawn care, you aren’t using lawn equipment, covering it in grass clippings and storing that inside your house. Your garage is technically inside your house.

Our garage has an epoxied floor, finished walls, and is half gym equipment. It’s a constant battle to clean up grass clippings from the days mow. In fact, mowing usually means I have to clean the garage as well. Time is money people!

More room in my dumpster without the grass clippings

I prefer to mulch mow my lawn, but that’s primarily because it doesn’t fill up our garbage can. The benefit is adding more nitrogen to the soil for a greener lawn, the tradeoff is a higher frequency of mowing.

We only get two dumpsters where we live. One is for garbage and the other for recycling. With a family of 5, our dumpster fills up FAST. I would have to buy special lawn clipping bags in order to preserve dumpster space and follow the rules of the local waste management service.
