Do you ever see lists of items that promise to save you money? For me, they never hit the mark. The reason is that more often than not, they’re gimmicky gadgets that don’t move the needle. I’ve curated a list of items we’ve purchased that have saved our family a ton of money. I’m a believer in owning vs renting, in buying once for life, and that you buy it right or you buy it twice.

Steel weight rack to avoid the gym and lose the dad bod
One of the smartest purchases I made in 2020 was to build a garage gym. For 10 years, I paid $30-$100 per month on gym memberships.
Now, I no longer have the recurring bill, the garage gym pays for itself, I save on gas and have more time to spend with my family. The garage gym has been amazing!
I bought second-hand steel plates and a bar off of Facebook Marketplace and realized the fact that weightlifting equipment really holds its value on the secondary market.
The average lifter simply needs a sturdy, 2” x 2” steel squat rack. Ideal for squats, shrugs, chin-ups/pull-ups, incline/decline bench presses, and other strength training exercises
Kindle Paperwhite to access the largest bookstore
I wasn’t an avid reader until my wife bought me a Kindle for my birthday. In just a few years, I’ve read hundreds of books.
It’s a great way to reduce the blue light from my phone and helps me prepare for a good night’s sleep.
How does a Kindle save you money? Well, you get access to books just for being a prime member, you can rent books from the library on the Kindle, you can subscribe to Kindle Unlimited, and have access to a huge library of books. Also, ebooks are typically 1/10 the price of hardcovers.
Meal prep containers for leftovers
Early on in our marriage, we realized the value of cooking for leftovers. That is, cooking dinner with the purpose of cooking enough for leftovers.
We use so much Tupperware that it can get spendy. Technically, this isn’t Tupperware brand, but it’s a heck of a lot cheaper.
We found this brand on Amazon and not only is it cheap, but you don’t feel bad about tossing Tupperware that’s stained and buying new.
Staying away from fast food will really help your wallet and your waistline!
Technivorm Moccamaster Coffee Brewer because it’s 10x
I know what you’re thinking, how is a $300 coffee pot supposed to save me money? That’s a fortune!
We found ourselves at our wit’s end when it came to our coffee. Kayla and I are both coffee fanatics. We. Love. Our. Coffee!
In 2020, we grew tired of K-cups and honestly the coffee sucks. After getting back into drip brewers, we had gone through 2 coffee pots in about 6 months costing us over $100.
After much research and Reddit sleuthing, I determined the Moccamaster was the solution to all of our issues. We were buying low-end, cheap, barely functioning coffee pots. And the coffee sucked as well.
The Technivorm makes THE BEST drip coffee I’ve ever had. Full stop. It’s simpler than an espresso machine (and cheaper), keeps us from getting coffee on the way to work, and is modular so you can replace the individual pieces if needed. By right or buy twice!
Car wash kit to get your spouse to wash your car
It’s actually amazing how much car washes cost in 2021. It’s easily $10+ to just run your car through a machine.
One thing I’ve learned working remotely is the value of getting outside in the sun.
A car wash kit is a great way to tell your spouse you love them and get them out in the sun to wash your car and save you money!
Hammock to realize that spending doesn’t equal happiness
One of the best ways to save money is to stay out of the grocery stores, away from the shopping centers, and off your phone! Relaxing in a hammock in the shade will literally save you a ton of money.
After a few minutes in the hammock, I realized that relaxation is what life is all about. Time away from the grind, time to rest, time to nap.
We’re out here chasing cars, watches, money, etc. and all we really need is to chill. Changing your perspective can have a real impact on your ability to put aside materialistic wants and focus on what’s most important to you.
Dryer vent cleaning tool so your house won’t burn down
Did you know that dryer vents are the reason behind 70%+ of house fires? Whether you hire it out or do it yourself, make sure you’re cleaning your dryer vents!
Hiring someone to clean out your dryer vent can cost hundreds of dollars.
It’s likely they’ll upsell you on cleaning out other vents, and systems as well.
We use this 25’ tool that connects right into my Dewalt Drill and gets it done in just a few minutes.
Wool dryer balls to speed up drying times
These little balls are free from chemicals, reduce drying time, reduce wrinkles and reduce the need for fabric softener and dryer sheets.
This isn’t going to get you to financial independence all by itself, but it’s a step in the direction of positive lifestyle change. Reducing clutter, reducing purchases, reducing chemicals, etc.
For $10, there’s not much downside. They also make pretty good snowballs — and in Texas, those are rare!
Dip powder nail kit so you can DIY
My wife has quite the collection of nail supplies and I don’t even question it. She’s willing to put in the effort to avoid getting manicure’s and pedicures and saving us a good amount of money.
To be completely honest, I’m not sure if this is the exact kit she uses, looks similar, but I know that her nails look darn good, and she isn’t breaking the bank.
Husbands… Maybe a good gift for your wife to get her started down the road of pretty and affordable!
Wahl clippers kit because 3 boys x $20 = $60 per month
Seriously though, why are kids’ haircuts so expensive? I can understand my haircut being expensive, I get the straight razor shave, massage, hot towel treatment, etc.
My boys go to a Great Clips and it’s $15 each + tip, it takes all of 8 minutes.
My wife has been giving the boys Wahl cuts for the past 8 years and it’s saved us a ridiculous amount of money.
She simply sits them in a chair in the bathroom, cuts their hair, puts them in the shower, and vacuums it all up. Easy!
